I hope your summer was fabulous. Happy Fall! May our winter be snowy and cold.

I spend my summer and fall days getting ready for winter. Pretty much all my days. If I am not mowing ski trails, I am mowing grass, I am cleaning out ditches, cutting, splitting or stacking wood, or in the vegetable garden. Everyday I am happy to go to the “office”. My view is wonderful! I love looking at cleared trails through the woods.

Chuck has most of the fields around us mowed and the trails he can mow with the tractor. On Saturday Dick started his fall trail mowing (with the weed eater). He was on the Chickadee and next trip he will start on the Loon.

Ian has been working and biking. He and I went and looked at and bought an excavator last week, hopefully it will be delivered this week. (Very exciting!) Then he is going to spend some time working on ski trails. His goal is smoother, so we need less snow. And ditching to move water away from the trails.

Our corner of Vermont is the same as every corner of Vermont, some properties have sold. As of today we are operating with the same trail system we have had since 1979. But we know we may have a few changes coming up in the next couple of years. One step at a time. Right now we are status quo.

From start to finish it was long, intense, good, better, and great.

The Covid Shed arrived December 8, 2020. Three bundles weighing around 13,000 pounds. We knew we would have to hurry to get it built, but…..

On Tuesday, December 15th, the forecast was for 8 inches of snow to fall Thursday/Friday. We finished the new Covid shed, picked up all the building supplies, put the plow on the tractor and got the grooming equipment gassed up and ready to go.

The night of the 16th of December it started to snow before we went to bed. The morning of the 17th, we woke up to 22 inches of snow. And it snowed and it snowed and it snowed.

The National Weather Service came to look and see if our 44.8″ of snow was the record for the biggest snow fall in Vermont in a 24 hour period. We didn’t ever hear back from the National Weather Service about the record snowfall, but unofficially, it was a lot of snow.

The snow made everything beautiful. Gave us a great start to the season. Allowing us to start the ski season December 18, 2020.

On Christmas day we went from 17″ of snow to 6″ on snow at the stake. It was a cold miserable rainy day. But that weather pattern didn’t last. It is not the weather pattern we were stuck in. This year when we all needed to be outside skiing more than ever the weather gods granted great weather and good snow.

We were open 90 days total. (6 of those days, Season Pass holders only.) The longest stretch of skiing, 68 days in a row. And about 42 of those days (in a row) stayed below freezing with highs hovering around 20º. (Blue wax!)

Closed, 52º this morning and really foggy. All the warm days in a row did just what you would expect, melted snow.

We had a great year, we had a lot of really good skiing. We were grateful to see some familiar faces, and we now have many new friends. (We also missed a lot of familiar faces, see you next year.)

We spent the last couple of days cleaning up, and yesterday we were able to put quite a bit of equipment away.

I have some statistics to put together, just a few, but I’ll do that tomorrow.

Here’s to a great season!

Open, 46º at 7 am and cloudy. Forecast high today, 65º, maybe some sun this afternoon. Corn snow skiing. All trails open, there are bare spots emerging here and there. No new grooming. Standard spring ski saying: nothing you can’ t ski over or around. The snow and the skiing change by the hour, variable conditions/spring skiing.

Thursday night rain, Friday, rain, Friday night, 34º. Saturday, 50º and partly sunny. We will not be open on Friday, and we really do not plan on being able to be open after that. If some how we can make if through the rain, I will let you know here on Saturday morning.

G and R in the in photo above, taken yesterday. They took Rob and Ian on an adventure in the woods. G was able to share his favorite ski, “to the rocks” with his greatest friend. Pretty lucky 8 year olds.

This was the year of rock stars. What about these cuties getting a ride in the pulk?

And it was a year of working to get everything going the right way.
