Skiing and New Hats, Great December 1st!

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

Open. 10km.

25º at 7am. Forecast high 33º.

Skiing is good for early December. The low spots haven’t quite filled in, so the trails are slightly bumpy (but well covered). Woodcock, Snow Goose, Turkey, Grouse and Peregrine are open.

If the weather forecast is correct we will be closed on Sunday and will reopen ASAP.  The forecast has colder temperatures, but I didn’t see snow flakes.

Look at this crew. The labor of love is what keeps this place open and you skiing! In their new “team Peregrine” Skida hats are Cliff, photo left, Web Master extraordinaire. He is also the GPS specialist helping us update the map. Middle, Jonathon, Ian’s sidekick and instigator. He spear headed raising the extra $$ to get the Peregrine smooth and wide. And he supports Ian out on the trails when Ian needs an extra person at 5am. And you all recognize Chuck, photo right. The plower, chain saw operator, trail mower, or token crumudgeonly Vermonter in the shop to welcome you with “how can we help you” or ” whatta ya want”. More team pictures to come as the rest of the “team” get their hats!

And we have hats for sale from Skida, the Vermont ski hat company.  They have our label on them! How cool is that. The are about 15 in shop. And 3 neck gaiters. If you want one don’t wait.

Snow Total For November……

The Wild Wings Gateway to the West

Open. 10 km. Woodcock, Snow Goose, Grouse, Turkey, and Peregrine.

26º at 7am and cloudy. You will need maxiglide. 40 inches of snow in November. Chuck keeps the records for Peru for the National Weather Service, and this is a record.

The skiing is good. Ian is out with the Ranger (new groomer from last year) and the Ginzu, new last year. Most of the sticks and branches have been picked up. Ian has been around and around and around. with the snow machine, groomer and chainsaw.  You may still come across a branch that has just fallen. Please chuck it aside.

We were only without power on Tuesday for about 7 hrs. There are still people in Londonderry, South Derry without power, and the power company hopes to have all the power restored by late Saturday. Ian still has no power. Shower and washing machine here.

Our friend, Bill, has been skiing a lot, 10 laps yesterday around the Peregrine. He has been skiing on his skis from the 1976 Olympics, he used them in the relay. They have mohair strips on the bottom. He told me in the snow we’ve had this November they have out skied any of the new waxless skis. We used to have mohair skis, and the extra mohair strips. We should have saved them.

Skiing in the Tunnel of Love

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

Open

29º at 7am

22 inches of snow on the ground. 4 inches of snow in the last 24 hours.

Open today as a work in progress. The picture is on the Turkey and yes, in places, you do feel like you are skiing through a tunnel. The snow is still in the trees. Sometimes you are skiing around and you hear the plops of snow falling out of the trees and get to see the ploof of snow hitting the ground. Grateful if it is not down your neck. There are sticks falling. If you see one please remove. Ian has been round and round picking up branches and sawing trees out of the way. Dick has been around picking up branches, tossing them out of the way and he even using the loppers to cut  the low hanging branches out of the way. I skied around (skied, meaning I had skis on my feet) and picked up branches and sticks. Amazing how sometimes the smallest little twig turns into a stick under your skis.

So, yes, you can come and ski. With all the limitations above. AND you will need maxiglide on your skis. So dig it out and put it in the car, or buy some when you get here.

A Little Snow Anyone?

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

Closed. Open to pass holders willing to pick up sticks.

28º at 7am.

Best guess at storm snow total, 14.5 inches and snowing.

20 inches of snow on the ground. Snow total for November 36 inches.

Yesterday there were places where I was walking through snow up to the top of my thighs. And places where I was shoveling 6 inches of snow.

The snow is heavy and wet and still stuck in the trees. The promised wind did not happen, the trees are still heavy and bent over.

Ian is out packing and picking up sticks and moving tree branches out of the way and trying to avoid tree branches falling on him. This has been quite the storm. We were without power for about 7 hours. And I know there are still people still without power. The power crew are hard and work, and they are saying this is as bad as they have seen.
