Grinding the Snow, Still Skiing

Open. 25º and cloudy at 7am. Expected high 29º remaining cloudy with the possibility of winter mix.

Ian is grinding up Woodcock, Snow Goose, Turkey, Grouse and Peregrine. The snow is grinding into a loose frozen granular. There will be a few icy spots. Shallow classic track in most places. It will be pretty fast, but skiable. It’s a good day for novices to snowshoe.

This is the view Ian has from inside the groomer.

This group of wonderful teenage skiers have just returned from 2 weeks of traveling. Some in Norway and some in British Columbia. They had a great time here yesterday! Around and around and then a few of them built a jump. If you’ve been here while the jump builders are here you know you can sit in the warming room and watch out the windows as they build, ski and jump. Watching kids play. What joy!

Skiable, But Glazed and Faster

Open. 35º at 7am and partly sunny. Expected high 39º.

The kids had fun in the snow.

Woodcock, Snow Goose, Turkey, Grouse and Peregrine. The tracks and the packed snow are glazed. The surface is quick. I put my skis in the tracks and pushed off and slid around. Fast but very skiable. Sometimes when the tracks are glazed you are better off out of the track.  Out of the track in the picture, but the photo is from last season.

The temperature tonight will go down to 20º. Which means Ian will be able to groom in the morning. And then Sunday night some sort of weather is coming in. We are hoping to end up an inch of snow, or so.

And there is a new Skida order in. Hats, neck warmers and headband. If you want a larger selection to choose from, get here today or tomorrow.

And Now Stickers For Day Passes

Open. 24º at 7am and overcast.

The skiing is still good, but will be faster than yesterday. The Woodcock and Snow Goose are open. Nate said skip the outer, last loop on the Snow Goose until the snow making crew has been out there. But Nate reported in the rest of the Snow Goose and Woodcock are fabulous. The Turkey, Grouse and Peregrine are also open and good skiing.

After all the good skiing talk, it will be faster today than is was yesterday. Just the nature of the beast.

Here is the official map. Cliff has been so, so helpful. Ian is pretty focused on how everything should be and Cliff and he worked on getting it right. The TrailHUB map is all up to date too. Cliff, Ian and I have learned a lot about TrailHUB in the last few days. Let one of us know if you need help with it.

The short term forecast has a short warm up and maybe a few rain drops or snowflakes. And the longer forecast is for colder with some snowflakes. Not a bad forecast.

And look we have day passes. We have never had the physical sticker, since 1974. Ta-da! I like them they are pretty cool! I know, I am being a little silly. But…

The Skiing is Good, and We Are Working On Maps

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

Open, 5º at 7am, partly sunny. Expected high today 22º.

Woodcock, Snow Goose, Turkey, Grouse and Peregrine are open.

Dick skied all open trails yesterday and reported back. All skiing is really good. He said the Snow Goose extension is still thin, he, Ian, and Chuck will tackle that on Monday with boughs and shovels to the wet spots. He is quite impressed with how well the shoveling they did last week held up on the Woodcock. Then with the grooming Ian did on Tuesday morning to even the trail out. Three times around each trail with the new groomer. Ian told me he was driving very slow, to even, loosen and move the snow from high spots to lower spots.

This is the map from TrailHUB. Cliff has been working his fingers raw trying to get the mapping all pulled together. He is amazing and doing a great job. He almost has us a paper map to hand out. And he has TrailHUB updated, so, you could use that on your phone instead of a trail map. When using TrailHUB on the trail, it GPSs you and drops a pin. You know exactly where you are. Let one of us know if you need help with TrailHUB.

The Burr and Burton ski team has been here every week day going on two weeks. They have their first ski race on Saturday and they are more prepared for the first race than they ever have been. This is quite a large team this year. Here is a picture of the skis they leave overnight. Ready to go again the next day.
