Open, -1º at 7am. Expected high 26º. The skiing is fabulous! All trails open. If you aren’t skiing today, the whole week looks good, organize some time to ski. Today will be the day we see the most sun.
Ian and G. skied the Chickadee/Loon and finished with the Peregrine on Sunday. Pictures worth a thousand words. Well here are some photos!
Ian and G. coming in off the Chickadee. 1/13/2019
Ian and G. on the Loon. Ian holding his phone behind his back and skiing down, at the same time taking pictures. G falls, and it was a tumble. Ian gets to the bottom of the hill and is waiting for him. And waiting. Checks his phone to see if the photos can tell him where G. is. He sees G.’s tumble in the photos. Still no G. Waits, and finally G. skis down. “Where were you?” Ian asks. G. says, “I fell, so I climbed back up the hill to do it again. I love the Loon!”

Open, -1º at 7am. Expected high today, 16º. Warmest part of the day right around noon . We have a great stretch of weather ahead of us. Ian re-groomed last night pieces of the system that would benefit from grooming.
Warming up enough to take a layer off. 1/12/2019
Today is a repeat of yesterday. And yesterday was phenomenal. The temperature is manageable. The sky is amazing. The trees are gorgeous. Everyone having a wonderful day. Skiers dressing well, no one cold. The skiing is so good, skiers skied enough to warm themselves up. And the layers were removed. Plan on today being the same. Warming up all morning, and about 2pm the sun starting to get low, and the temperature starting to drop. Have a couple layers close to add back on.
Mary reports in the Chickadee and Loon are wonderful. 1/12/2019
We saw many old friends yesterday. First visit of the ski season for them. Lots of Chickadee lovers. Well, the downhill is different. First major change on the downhill since 1974. The downhill is the same until about half way down, and then, there is a turn to the right, and you get to finish on the Peregrine.
If you haven’t been keeping up, the Peregrine is a new trail this year. 3.3 km of skating and classic. Designed by Bill Koch and Ian Black. Built by Cameron Chalmers, Ogden and Chalmers Landscaping. And the finish build done by a large crew of volunteers. You can tell the volunteers by their Team Peregrine hat.
We have been open and skiing for 38 days. (48 days for season pass holders). So we are thinking everyone has been here, and we don’t always remember to tell you about the changes. If you have any questions please ask, we love to talk about the new trail and the exciting changes we’ve made!
Open 0º at 7am. Clear, sunny skies. Really fabulous skiing. All trails open. Low trails tracked last night. Upper trails done worked on all day yesterday. What a day to ski!! Get out the warm clothes and get on the trails.
Friday, 4 degrees, warm happy kids. 1/12/2019
Friday afternoons after school local children gather to ski. They divide into groups and hit the trails. Play some games the adults organize. But when they have time to do what they want, they go up and down this hill. And up and down, and up and down. The sun was long down, the temperature was dropping and they skied on. Moms were called from warm cars, and they persisted. Up and down. They had on their warm clothes and they had a great afternoon.
In fewer words, the skiing is good. Get your warm clothes and get out and ski.
Remember
Dry mittens, shirt and socks, before and after skiing. Even during your ski, if you stop.
Mittens are warmer than gloves.
Neck warmer or gaiter.
A hood is nice.
Layers, wind proof on the outside.
Hand and toe warmers if you know you have cold hands or feet.
Once you are moving you will warm up, so the layers allow you to take something off if needed.
Dick marked this tree, with a chain saw, 1 foot intervals, up to 4 feet. And that is how we, you, know how much snow is up on the top. Look for the tree.
Open, 7º at 6:45am, and a clear, bright morning. High temperature today is 10º. The skiing is absolutely fabulous. The snow is wonderful. Being a little higher up in elevation, our snow stayed pretty dry during the last storm. The tracks are nice, the skate lanes are still a little soft.
Rob skiing on the Chickadee, right before it joins the Upper Blue Jay. 1/10/2019
The Woodcock, Snow Goose, Turkey, Grouse, Peregrine, and the Chickadee are groomed and ready to go. Middle Blue Jay is being worked on and Upper Blue Jay now groomed and ready to ski. The Loon will be primitive for another day or two. Meaning people are skiing, but Ian has not groomed it yet. Those who have skied report, fun, bumpy, and big wind drifts.
On the Chickadee, just before the second road crossing. 1/11/2019
I skied the Chickadee yesterday. I could have cut my time in half if I hadn’t kept stopping to take pictures, or just stopping to enjoy the beauty and quiet.
These are the tracks on the Peregrine. I am embarrassed to say I did not immediately recognize them.
Turkey tracks on the Peregrine. 1/10/2019
The turkeys are up on Peregrine waddling around, and puffing up to stay warm. You can stay warm too while you are outside skiing. Remember cross country skiing creates heat. And we all own the warm clothes, time to haul them out.
Mittens, NOT gloves!!
Neck gaiter.
Dry shirt and socks, before and after.
Layers. Thin layers. A good time for a down layer.
Break out the wool sweater. They really are warm.
And your long underwear! It will stay dry close to your skin.
A hood is good.
And if you know you have cold hands and feet, use hand warmers and/or toe warmers.
Carry a knapsack. If you overdress you can carry your extra clothes.
When Nordic skiing we all warm up quite a bit. So that makes it a great sport for cold weather (No chairlift). Sweating does happen. A dry shirt to wear for your second lap and/or to wear home is really nice.
