And We’re Skiing Again

Great day for a ski.

Open, 17º at 7am. Forecast high 33º.

Trails will be packed, no tracks set. It is almost rock solid under the new snow. Not the best conditions we’ve ever had, but a beautiful day to enjoy the woods. And quite a change from Wednesday’s 66°.

2 1/2 inches of snow Thursday afternoon. Fell as wet snow, and has now dried out. Ian is in the groomer and is going to see how much skiing he can get you. Turkey, Woodcock and Snow Goose to start. Then adding the Grouse and Goshawk, and the Lower Blue Jay. Check in when you get here to find out exactly where we are at in the grooming process. Our best guess is skiing today and tomorrow, and then day to day, until we get more snow.

Yoga today, 7:30-8:30am for the Sore and Stiff among you. 9-10:30am a flow class.  See about yoga and a full schedule here.

The road has harden up (refrozen). The nice road guys put down some gravel and used the road grader to flatten out some of the ruts.  Remember, aim high, drive slow, and don’t stop.

The temperature dropped but the birds are still singing their spring songs. The birds have been active and loud for the last few days. Watch for animal tracks in the new snow. This year we have seen fox tracks and the fox, rabbit tracks and the rabbit, and fisher tracks along with all the little animals running around leaving foot prints. The piliated woodpecker has been loud, listen for it. And someone heard a barred owl during the day last week.

Ahhh, Spring in Vermont…….

Sugaring time!

Closed, 29º at 7am. Forecast high 31º. Also forecast, 1-3 inches of snow. We still have base, so stay tuned.

Warm Wednesday temperatures ate snow like crazy. Thank goodness for the ice base. Snow dance time!!!3-6 inches and we can be skiing again.

The road went. That means the frost started coming out, warm temperatures day and night, no refreezing and all hell broke loose. The road was extremely muddy. Too muddy for the road guys to even fix it. But they are on it today, and should get it smoothed back out.

Navigating on the muddy roads: aim high, go slow, don’t stop.

USA Gold Medal in Women Team Sprint

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

Jesse and Kikkan win GOLD!

Closed, 44º, the forecast high is 63º. (We had hot dogs and smores planned for today. We will reschedule)

Yoga classes will still happen, today 7:30am and 9:00am.

The road is not good. When the temperature is warm during the day and warm at night, the road doesn’t refreeze and continues to soften. You would not want to drive the Bentley in here today. You would be driving the truck. Our Prius will be parked for a while.

On a different note, Team USA won a gold medal in the team sprints at the Olympics. WOW! Jesse and Kikkan.  WOW! This is the first medal for the women and it’s GOLD! Holy smokes! I haven’t seen the race yet, but I know how to stream it and I will watch it later.

And more about skiing. We will probably need a bit more snow to be open again. There’s still plenty on the ground, but it’s going to be really warm today. The weather this year………. We have had some really good skiing. But…. It hasn’t been easy, there have been quite a few challenges. We do still have a good base. So 4 to 6 inches will have us with skiing great conditions again. Stay tuned. Tomorrow I will tell about helping out the snow mobilers.

Spring Skiing, YES!

Some of the work we do when the temperatures get warm and the snow starts to shrink.

Open  42º at 7am forecast high 54º.

A wet granular spring skiing day. We are glad to still be open. 22km. Turkey, Woodcock, Snow Goose, the easier trails. Grouse, Goshawk, Lower Blue Jay and Chickadee (watch for water holes!), intermediate trails. Middle and Upper are open – water spots will get bigger as the day goes by

Is this the perfect powder day? No. Are we glad to still have some skiing, YES!

The skiing will be fine. Keep your eyes open for emerging objects, is the standard spring skiing advice. I heard the wet spots on Chickadee are growing, so step around them. We are going to ask you to step around them, so we can keep it open a little bit longer. The rain has stopped and it will be warm day, don’t overdress. But it is another great day to be outside.

Do watch for animal tracks, this is great weather for the animals to move. We haven’t seen the otter come thru yet. It moves down the brook on Woodcock, Snow Goose once a year. Time to be watching! Look for foot tracks and a belly slide.
