Open, cold spring skiing

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

Open, 15º at 7 am and sunny. All trails open. Use your discretion about the softening of the snow, with the temperature, sun, and your ability. There’s still a packed powder surface mostly, with a firmer base. Watch for glazed areas.

Ian used a groomer last night to clean up Turkey, Grouse, and the lower part of Peregrine, no new tracks were put in with a machine. It will soften up, but it will take a little time.

When you hit spring skiing just right, it does cause a smile to form.

The sun is shining and 15º at 7 am, clouding up around 11 am and the temperature around 34º. Rainy and 41º around 2pm.

We will be closed tomorrow, Saturday. And we will decide on Sunday morning once we are able to see what is left after the rain. Going from 60° and rain, to 23° Saturday night, will cause very icy conditions, as well as significant snow loss. So this might be it!! (Season Pass holders may ski on what is left, knowing no grooming is happening.)

Open, spring skiing with new snow

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

Open,18º and dropping, the sky is blue and the wind is blowing. 1 inch of snow overnight, blowing around.

Open 9-5.

Forecast high 30º and sun.

The photo is this morning. The skiing isn’t perfect. It is slow. There are a few ruts under the new snow from yesterday. But it’s fine and outside and skiing. No grooming today.

Outside, fresh air, one more trip around the Woodcock and Snow Goose, or Chickadee, or whatever you want, one more ski day in for the season. Don’t be in a hurry and enjoy the sunshine.

Looks like the skiing on Friday will be similar to today, but today’s soft spots will be tomorrows hard spots. Friday the softer skiing in the late morning,11ish.

I said we would hear more from Michael Fleming today. And with the new wind blown snow over the corn snow, it is a great day to hear about snow. Link to this poem and then the rest of his work. Thanks for sharing Mike!

Snow

What you cannot name, you cannot perceive —

so goes the claim. And then they trot out Snow:

Exhibit A. Eskimos, some believe,

have fourteen, or forty-three, words for snow

(estimates vary), so their wintry world

is rich with nuance; they can discuss snow

with discernment, like boys discussing girls,

whereas, enfeebled by our one word, snow,

our meager English tally, we’re rendered blind

to snow that falls in dreams of snow, to snow

that dogs have rolled in, all the many kinds

of drifted snow, graupel, grits, popcorn snow,

Sierra cement, styro-snow, champagne

powder, pack ice, poo ice, rock ice, corn snow,

cauliflower, crud, crust, mush, frozen rain,

slippery slop . . .

                           We’re oblivious to snow.

Great spring skiing; Wait until 11 to ski slow.

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

Open, 22º, the sun is rising to clear sky. High today 45º, blue sky and sunshine. Great spring skiing, hard and fast this morning, it’ll be a bit sporty with a few frozen ruts Softening around 10 am and slowing down by 11 am. All trails are open. Open 9-5 this time of year.

We had 3 people add their names to the “Skied 25 km, all trails in a day” list. This could be another day for that.

No new grooming today; it doesn’t make sense to spend the time and money to groom, as the sun and warm will soften the snow by mid-late morning. Grooming is likely done for the season.

On Saturday a new friend, Mike, drove up with his partner, for a birthday ski. He had never been here before, and I am glad he found us.

3/25 — Peru, Vermont: Wild Wings Ski Touring Center

Last week, my friend Janice S. told me that the skiing up at Wild Wings was fabulous, so of course I began salivating — ding ding ding! Marti had been asking me what I wanted for my birthday, so now I had an answer — Wild Wings! With ski conditions deteriorating in Brattleboro, I knew that the snow had to be better up in the Green Mountains. And Wild Wings is only an hour away!

We arrived amid a light snowfall, temp around 30 — perfect. I opened up the car to get my gear & suddenly realized that in the morning packing frenzy I’d forgotten to put my boots in the car — d’oh!

My new best friend Heather, the Wild Wings manager on duty, saved the day: she fixed me up with perfectly good rental gear, & in no time Marti & I were on the trail. And what a trail! A wide, well-packed base nicely coated with the fresh sleety, snowy stuff that was still coming down (“sneet”? “slow”??). The deep classic tracks made for very easy skiing, a bit on the slow side but that was all the better for enjoying the beauty of the woods. We did a big “green” loop, & then I took a turn around “blue” Peregrine, which was a blast with big, swooping downhills & nice, gradual uphills.

I’m more than tempted to come back tomorrow — but that’s not the plan. Stay tuned . . .

A+

Great spring skiing.

Open, 30º at 7 am and cloudy. Forecast high 39º becoming sunny.

Trails are being groomed as I type. The skiing is really nice spring skiing. All trails are open, about 17 km freshly groomed. Ian groomed Turkey, Woodcock, Snow Goose, Grouse, Goshawk, and Upper Peregrine. Jonathan groomed Chickadee and said it is in really nice shape with a track. He also reported Middle and Upper Blue Jay are looking good, but have not been re-groomed this morning. There are a few folks still wanting to ski every trail. This would be a great day for it. Just the right amount of warm.

And a fresh shot from today of the track at the beginning of Woodcock and Turkey. (You should see the photo albums on my phone and computer! Who knew anyone could or would take so many photos of groomed ski trails?)
