More flying off the jump.

Open, 25º at 7am. Forecast high 27º. And the forecast is for snow.

We are open and the skiing surface snow on the ground this morning is crunchy. New snow is already falling, a half inch, all ready, and the new snow will make the skiing good.

Skiing yesterday was fantastic! And jumping on this hill, always a hit!

We gathered sap yesterday. Boiled last night, until midnight. We made 6 more gallons of syrup. Up to 20 gallons for the year. Our high # of gallons for a year, on this evaporator, is 60 gallons. A pretty good year so far.

Tubing into a barrel, pumped into the gathering tank.

The Calm Before the Storm

Beautiful sunrise kind of morning.

Open, 16º at 7am. Forecast high 37º.

Spring skiing. Hard and fast in the morning, slower and softer as the temperatures and sun warm the snow.

The storm due in Wednesday/Thursday sounds quite exciting. Heavy, wet snow. 13 -17 inches of heavy, wet snow. Localized amounts up to 20″. We all love snow or we wouldn’t be here reading or writing about skiing. Really, that much heavy, wet snow will be a lot of work.

The skiing this weekend will be fantastic. Great weekend to come up!

In preparation of that work, Ian is working on the Ranger (aka Polaris side by side). The new rig has 50 hours on it and it is time for an oil change. Planning on needing to put in many miles Wednesday and Thursday to get it all groomed out for your pleasure, he is  off to Pinnacle View to get the oil and needed filter. Home to change the oil and prepare for snow.

The late morning job is gathering the sap. The sap wasn’t expected to run yesterday at 34º, but the temperature went to 37º. We will be boiling by late this afternoon if you would like a tour of the sugar house.

A Little New Snow

Jonathon is ready to ski another day!

Open, 25º at 7am. Forecast high 34º.

Skiing today will be good. A little new snow in the tracks to slow it down and away we go. Yesterday Ian groomed, the Turkey, Woodcock, Snow Goose, Grouse Goshawk and Lower Blue Jay.  With the new snow this morning in the tracks skiing is better if he leaves it alone.

Ian and Chuck boiled in the sugar house again yesterday. We are up to 14 gallons of syrup, the most we have made on this size evaporator in a year was 60 gallons. And yesterday’s syrup seemed particularly tasty. Don’t know how or why that happens, but we’ll take it. A little surprise sap run on Saturday, Ian gathered and they boiled it down on Sunday. Ask Ian about the 3/16ths tubing lines we are running, it is an interesting conversation. I am inclined to believe sugar makers are the mothers of invention.

Spring Skiing

Always a great place to be.

Open, 28º at 7am. Forecast high 32º.

We have and are experiencing an extended number of spring skiing days in a row. The definition of spring skiing is, fast early or late in the day, faster in the shade, slower in the sun, and nothing you can’t ski over or around. Corn snow, snow that has been thawed, frozen, thawed frozen.

Ian is grooming the “low trails” Turkey, Woodcock, Snow Goose, Grouse, Goshawk, and Lower Blue Jay. The skiing today is variable. Another spring skiing thing. The tracks are in, in most places, and the skiing is quick. The forecast is for a little snow this afternoon, which would make the skiing pretty good.

Our poor lower parking lot yesterday turned into a little Wild Wings Mud Bog event. So for now the lower parking lot will be blocked off. It was exciting, there was some cheering. And I have some video to post soon. The person who did get stuck in the mud, drove straight into the mud and stopped. She had to because there was another car in the way. But remember, aim high, go slow, and don’t stop.
