Closed, 9º at 6:30am. Clear sky and cold. The 4 inches of snow settled down to about 3 inches.
The tracks are on the Ranger and it is ready to work. Ian used the Ranger to pull the roller around the Peregrine. There is so little snow, the roller was banging on the rocks and was really loud. The noise is a reminder of just how many rocks are on the trails, and how the nice heavy snow expected at the end of the week will give us good base. Snow dance for snow/sleet or sleet/snow. The combo is amazing base. And while we are asking for something over which we have no control, we’d really like 8-12 inches of the amazing base building white stuff.
All of a sudden the warm fall temperatures are gone and winter seems to be making an appearance.Snow is in the forecast. As of Monday afternoon The Weather Channel is saying 3-5 inches, Tuesday night and 3-5 inches Wednesday. The National Weather Service is saying 1-2 inches and then mixed precipitation on Wednesday. The Skiology Community page is saying 4-6 inches of snow. So we will end up with something. As Chuck would say, “I’ll tell you on Wednesday afternoon how much it snowed.”
The snow tires are on our car. The truck goes to get it’s snow tires on Wednesday, road conditions allowing. This year we have been working on picking up outside for days. The long fall gave us ample opportunity to get the spring/summer/fall picked up and not have too many surprises next spring. Yet, we still found items to pick up this morning. Moving some picnic tables, moving some culverts, picking up cones. You have your own list I’m sure. Those were all things on my list I can cross off.
If you buy a season pass here’s your reminder. (Online link.) Put it on your list, buy the pass and you can cross it off!
Closed, unless we get more snow! (Season pass holders, ski at your own risk.)
This first block of photos gets us through December. Enough snow to ski starting December 3rd. But by December 30th we were raking twigs and branches off the trail.
And now January into the start of February. The skiing was really great again by the middle of February.
February, the month of cold and snow, and day after day of really good skiing. This was an Olympic year. And for us the year of Stratton Mountain magazine article and WCVB TV Chronicle story. The year Ben O won 2 Olympic silver medals and WCAX came down to talk to our local folks, and then stood in the dark until 6:30 to report “live” from Wild Wings. I repeat Connor stood outside in the snow, in the dark to report live from Wild Wings. We went to Depot Burger for dinner, and watched his live report on my phone. February might only be 28 days, but those 28 days were long and we groomed everyday, and it was a crazy month! February was also a month of “ski all the trails in one day” blow up. So many skiers did the challenge, and the challenge had nothing to do with us, other than that we were able to get all the trails open. It was exciting and created it’s own energy. Congratulations to everyone that did the 25 km.
And March………. snow banks, great skiing, fun skiing, lots of snow, and a few blow downs.
And the final “ski all the trails” sign up sheet. Notice the final name in the bottom left column, Micheal Zhoe, he mentioned us in an article in the Strategist,Do You Wear a Skida Like an Olympic Skier? It has been a very full ski season. So wear your Skida, and a mustache for Ben if you can. Start your snow dance for next year now! Carry this momentum forward, cuz next year might just be the best year ever!
Open at 9 am. The temperature at 7:30 is 27º. The forecast high is 43º. Rain/winter mix is in the forecast for this afternoon.
Groomed this morning, Turkey, Grouse, and Woodcock.
Fast corn snow this morning. Slow down as the temperature goes up. We did end up yesterday afternoon with mashed potato skiing. Your timing will affect your experience. If you want fast skiing, get here early. If you want slow skiing get here later.
We will be closed after today. If you have a season pass you are welcome to ski, do not expect any more grooming.
Thanks for a great season. I will do a follow up post with more photos.
Open at 9 am. The temperature at 7 am is 30º, and the sky is cloudy. The forecast high is 35º, with the sun coming out.
Ian has been in the groomer since 4 am. Low trails are groomed, 10 km. Woodcock, Snow Goose, Turkey, Grouse, and Peregrine.
We are coming toward the end. If you have been waiting for 1 more ski day, today might be the day.
Today is the 95th day of operation. Opening day, December 3rd. We were closed for rain and ice a few days. But had 67 straight days of skiing in one stretch. So much powdery, cold snow. We all were a little spoiled, and it was wonderful.
Note: Nordic Pulse distances are accurate on the map but are often only segments of what you will ski so refer to the distances on our trail map to plan your ski. We are always happy to help at the shop.
