Not Open, Yes, It Snowed

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

We are closed. Even with 10 inches of new snow. We are trying our darnedest to stay put, and practice social distancing. Ian happens to be the best at this with Chuck a close second. Me, staying away from other people I like,  is not really what I am good at.

We are still closed because, 1) not spreading Covid-19. 2) We lost most of the base, and what is left is really icy. 3) This is heavy wet snow and it is going to melt fast.

This is how we spent a day last week:

All 6 of us had on skis. We skied a back country loop, 3 or 4 miles. It was hard skiing, crusty snow in spots, icy in other places, soft and mushy where the sun was shining directly on the snow. We skied on leaves, grass, beaver ponds, beaver pond damns, and snow. We crossed two brooks and both times had throw every ones skis and poles over to the other side and then shimmy across a downed tree to get across the water. The photo below is Ian just getting over the first log.

Please be safe friends. This will pass and we will all get to our new normal. We look forward to see each and everyone of you next season.

May you be well, May you be peaceful and at ease. May you filled with loving kindness.

Closed, For The Year, Unless We Get A BIG Snow

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

Closed for the year, unless it snows, a lot!

The photo above, thanks to Anna Terry, is Sophie and Wyatt on March 6th, last Friday. I think the game was sharks and minnows.

The snow has shrunk so much. And now it has been pouring all morning at 35º. Not enough left to ski or snowshoe  on.

We skied 70 days this season, opening December 3rd and closing March 10th. And we had a lot of good skiing during the season. Thanks for all your support this year, years in the past, and into the future. We are in the process of renting an excavator hopefully for September to get more trails more level, so we can ski on less snow. And I need to start sawing, splitting and stacking firewood.

Darn It! We Are Done Until It Snows

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

Closed today. Darn it. Part of the Peregrine is groomed today for skiers practicing for the World Cup in Quebec. It has been a great season. We had 70 days of skiing, most of it pretty good. If we somehow get a big snow, check back in.

Catie made this sign early in the winter. It is on the Peregrine, and she is right it is pretty magical.

We had a lot of really great skiing! Thank you Ian! And thanks to the great equipment we bought over the last couple of years, it all worked really hard. Worth every penny. And we are very grateful to the precipitation that fell as snowflakes instead of rain drops. And thanks to all of you for your support this year!!! Unless it snows, quite a bit, see you next season.

Another Spring Ski Day

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

Open today. At 7 am the temperature is 37º, and the sun is shining. Good spring skiing, watch for emerging objects. We are not grooming today, it didn’t get cold enough overnight. The snow will soften as soon as the sun hits it. All trails still open. 25 km classic and 6 km skate.

Timing is everything in the spring. Fast, less fast, not too slow, slow, really slow, slow, not too slow, a little quick, faster and fast. Early morning to the end of the day. When do you want to ski? And time it right.

This picture is skiing on the Peregrine, middle of the day yesterday. The Peregrine has a northeast exposure, so it holds snow longer, the snow doesn’t get as soft, and we can ski it longer in the spring. I realize not everyone can or wants to ski the Peregrine. But if that is your thing, it is really nice.

Spring is springing quickly and the snow is receding just as quickly. We are here today, and we will reassess tomorrow morning. But the forecast doesn’t look promising.
