We are skiing today and there is snow in the forecast

Open, 24º, and cloudy. Expected high today 33º. Skiing today is fair to good, hard pack skiing, getting a little fast with thin spots. Turkey, Woodcock, Snow Goose, Grouse, Peregrine and Chickadee are open. 16 km, classic and 6 km skate.

Finally some snow in the forecast. The storm is forecast for Friday night and Saturday, and a winter storm watch has been issued for that time. There has also been some talk of mixing and changing to rain. As of this writing the forecast is for 3-5 on Friday night. 5-8 during the day on Saturday. Grooming will be a tough call and we will do what we think is best for the situation that unfolds.

We are so, so happy to be talking about snow! But this storm is bringing in some warm weather, so there are no guarantees. But we will be thrilled with a net gain! It would/will be nice to have a little cushion.

Skiing, 16 km

Open, 24º at 7 am and cloudy. Forecast high 33 and cloudy.

16 km open. Woodcock, Snow Goose, Turkey, Grouse, Goshawk, Peregrine and Chickadee.

From Hilary, “Your post makes it sound like we skiers have been suffering somehow and “enduring” the conditions – It’s been utterly glorious! Every day something a little different – and still total magic. The grooming has been amazing – and the skiing even better. Thank you!”

From Ian, “Skiing today is fair to good, hard pack skiing, getting a little fast with a lot of thin spots. Turkey, Woodcock, Snow Goose, Grouse, Peregrine and Chickadee are open. 16 km, classic and 6 km skate. ”

And now you know why I am stuck in the middle, “Sounding like a lawyer,” is what Eddie told me.

Yesterday Ian and Dick spent about 8 hours total shoveling out on the Woodcock and Snow Goose. They are preparing for the weekend weather. A weather event is coming. It appears right now to be mostly snow, switching to rain and back to snow. As always we hope/wish for a net gain of snow.

This is Still Skiing day 3…..

Open, 24º and partly cloudy. Expected high today 29º. Skiing today is fair to good, hard pack skiing, getting a little fast with a lot of thin spots. Turkey, Woodcock, Snow Goose, Grouse and Peregrine are open. 16 km, classic and 6 km skate. The Chickadee is open today, recommended only if you have a strong snowplow.

We have now been open 21 days. Not in a row. We opened the 18th of December after the dump of powdery, fluffy snow, 44.8 inches which fell in about 14 hours. Ian was able to groom it, and that snow gave us 6 days of glorious skiing. Large amounts of snow are incredible hard on grooming machines, broke the bogey wheel on the Ranger. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day it rained and that deep, beautiful snow, all but a few inches, pretty much melted in 18 hours. A few days later we then opened for season pass holders only for 4 or 5 days. We were only able to open with 3 km skiing after a shoveling party. Not that they were partying, just that it took about 15 people to get it skiable again. The storm that showed up for New Year’s turned out to be heavy, wet snow and was/is good base. We have now been skiing on that 3.5 inches of snow for 10 days. That snow is tired, thin and hard. BUT, it is skiing and we are happy to have 16 km of fair to OK skiing.

There are now snowflakes in the forecast. Starting Friday night, continuing Saturday, and ending Saturday night. The skiing on Saturday will improve if it really snows. But Ian won’t groom until Saturday night or Sunday morning depending on what actually falls from the sky.

Still skiing……..

Open, 24º, a half inch of new snow and cloudy. Expected high today 27º and cloudy. Skiing today is fair to good, hard pack skiing, getting a little fast (new snow will slow it down) with a lot of thin spots. Turkey, Woodcock, Snow Goose, Grouse and Peregrine are open. 16 km, classic and 6 km skate. The Chickadee is open today, recommended only if you have a strong snow plow.

We were all embarrassingly happy with the snow flakes falling Monday afternoon. It was about 20 flakes, and we were ridiculously excited. Thank goodness it snowed a little more overnight. Ian is not grooming and leaving the new snow on top of the groomed trails. He skied it this morning and this is the best use of the new snow.

Ian wishes we had more snow, he finds it frustrating to not be able to have perfect skiing all day, every day. That would be his wish. While I understand his frustration, I am so happy we have any skiing to offer you.

Keep up the good work everyone. Home if you are sick, masks, a ski pole distance away from other people, and the contact tracing form. Thanks.
