Peace out. The end is near.

Open, 11º, and sunny. Fast until the sun warms the snow and the snow softens up. Expected high today 40º and sunny this morning, a few clouds this afternoon. All trails are open, with the reminder, the temperature and the sun soften the snow, which slows it all down. So, before the temperatures rises, or in the shade the skiing will be faster. Spring skiing, the conditions vary.

We are getting close to the end. Everyone wants a date. As of today, I know we will make it thru today and Thursday. We will then reassess the road and the rain. And decide about Friday and the weekend. We will let you know as soon as we know.

And we are hoping for the sap to run today. Another reason for warmer temperatures.

Cold Nights, Warmer Days

Our friend Larry, 3/24.2019.

Open, 17º at 7am and sunny. High today 32º. Skiing will be softer and slower between 10:00am and 2pm. 22 km open. The cold nights make for crunchy snow. Warm melts the snow, cold refreezes the snow. 22 km classic and 6 km skate. When the snow is cold and crunchy it is faster. Spring conditions expect the snow to vary.

I am going to say is again. Warm temperatures, like Sunday the 24th, 44º, makes mashed potato snow. Cold temperatures, like the nights have been, 20º, freezes the snow and makes it crunchy, which makes it faster,

The snow will warm up and soften in the sun today, but the shade could/will still be a little fast.

And speaking of spring conditions, that is what makes the sap run. We gathered yesterday morning and boiled and made 6 gallons of syrup. Pretty good day. The sap was 4% which is really high coming straight out of the trees. Less time to boil it down into syrup.

This sap is sweet. 4%. 3/25/2019

Spring Sun

Tubing into a barrel, pumped into the gathering tank.

Open, 22º at 7am and sunny. High today 34º. Skiing will be softer and slower between 10:00am and 3pm. 22 km open. Ian is grooming a bit – Turkey, Woodcock, Snow Goose groomed and tracked. Grouse, Goshawk and Upper Peregrine for skate. 22 km classic and 6 km skate.

We are gathering sap this morning. And if there is enough sap, getting the evaporator going and making some syrup

The birds are loving this spring weather, the chickadees are singing their spring song. Chuck heard a barred owl hooting the other day, we hope he is catching red squirrels. Chuck has seen robins and red winged black birds. The other day Cindy and I saw a hawk riding a thermal. And on Saturday morning out back at the snow measuring stake we had 32 ” of snow. The most snow measured at the stake all season. Spring is emerging, it is just not in a hurry.

Great day for a ski.

Great Spring Ski Day

Yep, this was taken today!

Open, 21º and sunny at 7am. Expected high 44º. Great spring skiing! Wet powder snow as it warms. 22 km open, 22 km classic and 6 km skate. Ian is in the groomer on the low trails. The snow on upper trails is the softest between 10 and 2. Not many days left get out and enjoy!

The skiing is great, especially 10 to 2ish when the warm sun or temperatures soften the snow. Earlier or later and the snow get harder and faster. There are people who like each. Which are you?

Sounds like there will be more sun this morning, plan accordingly.

We made some maple syrup on Friday, a nice medium amber. If you have a craving for waffles and new syrup there is a little in the shop for sale.

The dirt, muddy, roads are doing ok. If you are in some mud, remember, aim high, out of the ruts, go slow, and don’t stop. If you get stuck, it happened last week on Lover’s Lane, call a tow truck. If you’re coming from Londonderry (east) drive to Peru (the JJ Hapgood Store) and use Hapgood Pond Road to avoid Lovers Lane, which is often the muddiest dirt road around.
