Ski It While You Can

Yep, yesterday was that nice. 3/9/2019

Open, 29º, and cloudy. The skiing is fair to good. A little bit faster than the last few days. The Woodcock, Snow Goose, Turkey, Grouse, and Peregrine are open. The Chickadee, Loon and Upper Loop of the Blue Jay are open, Experts only. After today we will need snow again.

Ian shoveled the thin spots on Snow Goose and Woodcock on Thursday. And worked shoveling the Turkey on Friday. There are some thin spots that can easily be skied over or around. Ski it today. Tomorrow may not be so good.

The storm for tonight and tomorrow is forecast as mixed precipitation, rain, snow, sleet. I’ll let you know tomorrow what the outcome is. In the mean time, you probably want to ski today.

Still Skiing On Friday!

Open, 23º at 6:44 am. Forecast high 36º and partly cloudy skies.

Skiing today is fair to good. The snow cover is getting thinner in spots. The Chickadee is still open today. (New sign in photo.)  This is the better day to ski out of the next few.

20 km of skiing today. Woodcock, Turkey, Snow Goose, Grouse, Peregrine, Chickadee, Loon and Upper Blue Jay. (Watch out for a few thin or open spots.)

The forecast isn’t so great for the weekend, all the snow possibilities have turned to freezing rain, rain/snow mix. Time will tell, we are still hoping to come out ahead. Maybe?!!

Blue Sky And Great Skiing, WOW!

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

Open, 13º at 7 am, clear skis. Forecast high 29º. The skiing is really good. (There are a few thin spots.)

Trails open today, Woodcock, Snow Goose, Turkey, Grouse, Peregrine, Upper Blue Jay, Loon, and Chickadee. It is about 20 km. All with a track for classic skiing.  Peregrine, Grouse and Turkey are also packed out with a skate lane.

New signs, Jon and Cindy whipped up some lovely new signs. And yesterday Ian started putting them out and around. Always nice to know where you are going.

Skiing is good, thin in spots. And Cliff said on the top of the Upper Blue Jay as you start down the other side, watch for a rock in the middle of the trail.

The forecast for this weekend is trending warmer. The snow/rain line is really close. Elevation will help with snow vs rain. We hope to come out on the plus side for snow!

Today’s A Great Day For A Ski

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

Open, 13º and blue sky. The forecast high for the day is 29º. (You may need Maxiglide on no-wax skis.)

The skiing is really good. The surface is packed powder/ some areas hardpack. The definition of hardpack is; When fresh snow becomes densely packed, it is hardpack. The snow has never melted and recrystallized, but has been tightly compressed through grooming. And hard pack snow is really nice to ski on. The tracks hold up and last longer. With warmer temperatures the skiing will be solid and fun. The cover is still a little thin, so we are grooming as little as possible. We haven’t groomed since Sunday morning.

As people found over the weekend, cold snow is slow snow.  When the temperature is cold, the snow is slow and if the snow is wind blown, even slower. Cold temperatures and wind blown snow are really slow.

Now we have fresh, hard packed snow and the temperatures are going to go close to 32º, and the fresh snow, and temperatures around 32º are the reason you may need Maxiglide.

The temperatures for the rest of the week have us with highs around 32º. There is another storm forecast for this Saturday/Sunday. Ian saw a model run yesterday saying Albany, NY could get 54 inches of snow this weekend. That is from one of their first model runs. We are laughing because that is ridiculous. The Single Chair Weather Blog guy, Josh, said there is a 33% chance of no snow, 33% chance of 6 inches of snow, and a 33% chance of this being a significant snow storm. So there you have it.
