Open, 16º at 7:30 am and cloudy. Expected high 23º and partly sunny.
10 km open. What we consider the low trails. Turkey, Woodcock, Snow Goose, Grouse, Goshawk, and Peregrine. No Chickadee or Middle or Upper Blue Jay today.
The snow was frozen to start this morning. Thank goodness for the big machine. Ian has been in that machine since 3:30am. Around and around, using the tiller and grinding it up. He said 95% ground up nicely and the other 5% is either bumpy or harder. There is a track and it looks good.
I skied and it is very skiable and fun. I was on slow skis. I have skied all my life and I am 63. If you get here and skiing isn’t for you, you could always snowshoe to get some exercise and fresh air.
On the Snow Goose yesterday, Jamie and Hillary saw this Barred Owl. Look around while you are out there, you never know what you are missing.
And this happened yesterday too. Fun, giggles and fashion. A group of six, out for a really good time and they were successful. We love fun people!!!
Open, 37º at 6:30am and cloudy. Forecast high 40º, the sun shining and the temperature starting to drop this afternoon. The low temperature overnight tonight, around 12º.
Spring skiing, variable conditions. All trails open, 25 km, subject to change if we decide the down track has gotten too hard and fast Ian is in a groomer on the low trails.
When the temperature goes up and down like it has been doing it affects the skiing. The snow is wet granular vs soft powder. This makes it faster. For 90 of the skiers we had yesterday the skiing was great. For 10 of the skiers we had yesterday it was too fast.
Overnight tonight the temperature will drop to 12º and the high tomorrow is 21º. The snow will be different again. Harder and faster. Klister and double poling. Ian will groom as the temperature drops. I will let you know more Sunday morning.
The porcupine in the photo above is very photogenic. He waddles and saunters up and down the trail, in the woods, and down the road.
FYI, Winter Diet of a porcupine, from Dr Google:
While a porcupine does not hibernate, it will eat evergreen needles and the inner bark of trees in order to make it through the colder months. These foraging habits cause severe damage and can even kill trees. Many coniferous trees are highly toxic and require a lot of energy to digest.
Open, 28º and partly cloudy. We did get snow on Thursday. I know lower terrain had rain. But it was white up here.
Today all trails open. 25 km. Skiing is good spring like skiing, variable conditions.
Saturday, the day will start warm. The temperature is suppose to drop. The plan for the weekend, get though Saturday, the skiing will be fine. And use the Snow Cat with the tiller to grind everything up on Sunday morning. We will end up with a frozen granular surface, and it is very skiable and fun. Stay tuned.
Carry a knapsack. If you overdress you can carry your extra clothes.
When Nordic skiing we all warm up quite a bit. So that makes it a great sport for cold weather (No chairlift). Sweating does happen. A dry shirt to wear for your second lap and/or to wear home is really nice.
