Spring Skiing, 21 km open

Open, 28º at 6:45 am and cloudy. The forecast even says a snowflake or two this morning. I would love two snowflakes, but I will be surprised if they fall from the sky. The sun is forecast to come out around noon and the temperature will go up to around 45º.

The photo is from yesterday. We have 21 km open. There is a bare spot on the first uphill on the Chickadee. This is good spring skiing. Nice corn snow. Soft on top with a good base. I am saying the base is “ok”. It is great to ski on, just not as deep as we would like it to be to get us through the next couple of days.

And getting through the next couple of days is what we need to do. Warm and rain are in the forecast for Saturday. Sunday we will have to survey what’s left, and decide Sunday morning how to move forward. We could really use some new snow.

The road is getting pot holed. Drive slow. Drive on dirt roads slowly anyway, but especially with pot holes. Muddy dirt roads: you need to aim high, drive slow, don’t stop.

Today and Friday, good spring skiing. The weekend, is questionable. Snow Monday/Tuesday????

Open, 22º at 7 am. Forecast is for sun and 40º. Fast and fun in the morning if that is what you like. Slower and beautiful in the middle of the day, if you don’t like to fly. And faster again at the end of the day. This photo is from today.

Another moose siting on the Chickadee/Blue Jay, the moose, moose tracks and moose scat. Please be respectful and keep your distance.

Today and tomorrow will be spring skiing days. We should be able to ski Saturday also, but pay attention here just in case the weather is weird. Sunday is questionable. If we can limp though the weekend, Monday night, Tuesday look like we could get some much needed snow. And that would set us up nicely for a week or so. Cross your fingers and toes, pay homage to Ullr, the god of snow and winter. Wear your jammies inside out. Do whatever it takes to get new flakes.

Low trails groomed last night with the snow cat. Loose frozen granular. All trails will be softer in the middle of the day.

Open, 15º at 6:30 am, today, sunny with a high of 37º.

The low trails were groomed last night; Turkey, Grouse, Woodcock, Snow Goose and Peregrine. Not groomed last night Chickadee and Middle and Upper Blue Jay more firm, (aim for the middle of the day).

Where Ian groomed looks good. Photos below are from this morning. Very skiable, still fast. The skiing will slow down in the middle of the day in the sun. The skiing will get quick again when the sun goes down.

There is a high school race here this afternoon. The race starts at 3:00. Racers will be arriving between 1:00 and 2:00. While they are here your best ski would be the Woodcock, Snow Goose. As always if you have any questions just ask.

Good spring skiing. Faster early and late, slower in the middle of the day.

Open, 10º at 6:30 am. Good spring skiing. 10º this morning, high today 32º and sunny.

This photo was taken this morning about 6:30. (We have some light.) And this is what the tracks and skiing look like.

Fast in the morning, slowing down during the middle of the day, fast again late in the day. The skate lane is firm and the track is solid. It is quick, but skiable. A few people found it too firm. A lot of people were fine with it. A few loved the speed. I feel like Goldilocks each time I write that. This is the 4th day of the same weather. Wednesday will be warmer in the middle of the day, 37º, so a little slower. Thursday and Friday 42º in the middle of the day, a little slower.

Late Wednesday we have a high school ski race, starts at 3 pm. To avoid that crowd plan to be done skiing by around 2.

The sign elf has been at it again. He has summed up the summer/fall season well. I would be cold to swim in the brook.
