Spring Skiing Kind of Day

Lots of good skiing happening! 2/22/2019

Open, 11º sunny. Forecast high 36º and sunny this morning, clouding up this afternoon. Spring skiing. Fast in the morning, slower in the middle of the day, fast again late in the day. All trails (Not Loon) open. 22 km classic and 6 km skate. Pick of the day yesterday, toss up between Woodcock/Snow Goose and Upper Loop of the Blue Jay.

The new groomer arrived yesterday. Ian is grooming this morning with the “old” groomers. The Polaris side by side/Ginzu set up is a year old and the snow machine is one month old.

This new groomer, a PistonBully 100, is the machine that eats hard snow and spits it out in perfect corduroy with tracks. But it is way!!! more complicated than our old PistonBully 70. The technology really changed in the last 30 years. Luckily, the snow conditions are such, that Ian can groom with what he knows, as he learns this new baby! He has turned into quite the groomer, one of the best around. I know he will do this machine proud.

Spring Skiing Days

A great family ski. 2/21/2019

Open, 26° at 7am. Expected high 31° cloudy this morning becoming sunny  this afternoon. All trails open, except Loon. 22 km classic 6 km skate.

Heather and kids skied the Peregrine, Middle and Upper Blue Jay yesterday. They left around 1pm. The snow was soft, the sun had been out and the temperature was about 35º.  Slow skiing. Ian said take longer skis, because of the slow skiing. Well, the sun went behind the clouds. The wind shifted, the snow firmed up and the skiing got fast earlier than we thought it would. Lesson learned. When the temperature goes up and down, the skiing changes. This is typical spring skiing. Fast in the morning, then slow, back to fast and then to faster.

Heather and the kids did great, they made it safe and sound. But…we all need to remember, up and down temperatures affect the skiing! If in doubt, please ask us.

The low trails are ground up and a little quick, but very fun if you like to glide. The longer, upper trails, are much faster and firmer and chunkier: if in doubt, ask one of us.

AND, the new groomer gets here today! This is quite exciting. Could be quite a crowd for the unloading. If you want to watch it get put together, you may want to bring your lawn chair. And I heard on the q.t. there is a little contest going on for naming rights.

Good Skiing…An Inch Of Snow Topped With A Tiny Crust

ra-5a4bd91746f71523

Open, 21º and cloudy. Forecast cloudy this morning, more sun this afternoon and about 35º. We had an inch of snow overnight with a tiny crust on top. Ian has groomed the skate lane. Nice skiing, not fast. And the tracks are being skied in. It is slow and you need maxiglide.

It is funny to describe. It is quicker, but fun, good skiing. The sky is getting light and if the sun comes out. Well, it could be down right delightful

And tomorrow is the day. New groomer delivered in the afternoon. Wow! This is big folks. You might want to ski this weekend just to check it out!

And remember follow this sign for short cuts! Or to return to nordic center.

More Good Skiing! And I’m Not Tired Of Saying Good Skiing!

This 6 year old skied the Middle and Upper Blue Jay yesterday. 2/19/2019 Can anyone name the spot?

Open, 5º at 7am. Partly cloudy. Forecast for today, 26 and partly cloudy, partly sunny. Snow this evening, changing to a wintry mix. 3-5 inches of snow/sleet is predicted.

Today, another great day of skiing. All trails, except Loon, are open and skiing great. The surface is now what is called hard pack. The snow is firm and not as slow as cold softer snow (yesterday, for example). So great tracks and a firm surface makes for a fabulous ski.

Ian put a video on our Instagram account of skiing the first downhill on the Upper Blue Jay. You can find us on Instagram at wildwingsski .  I think I’m headed up there, it looks like fun!

Last night. Full moon, great skiing, and it was cold out. We had about 20 people and we are hoping to do a few more night skis in the future. Stay tuned we will let you know. Planning ahead, get a headlamp to take out with you. The moon isn’t always available. But skiing at night is fun with the right conditions.
